November is Diabetes Awareness Month
Each November, FamilyCare Medical Group (FCMG) joins health professionals across the country in recognizing National Diabetes Awareness Month—a time to raise awareness about the importance of prevention, early detection, and effective management of diabetes.
Understanding Diabetes
Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when a person’s blood glucose (blood sugar) levels are too high. It affects more than 37 million Americans, including both adults and children. When not properly managed, diabetes can lead to serious complications, including damage to the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and heart—and it has also been linked to certain types of cancer.
There are three main types of diabetes:
Type 1 Diabetes: An autoimmune condition in which the body doesn’t produce insulin.
Type 2 Diabetes: The most common form, often linked to genetics, obesity, and lifestyle factors that affect how the body uses insulin.
Gestational Diabetes: A temporary form that develops during pregnancy but may increase the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.
Prediabetes, a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet in the diabetes range, affects about 96 million U.S. adults—many of whom don’t even know it. The good news? With early detection and lifestyle changes, prediabetes can often be reversed.
Diabetes Symptoms to Watch For
While some individuals may not experience symptoms right away, common warning signs of diabetes can include:
- Increased thirst or frequent urination
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fatigue or irritability
- Blurred vision
- Slow-healing cuts or infections
- Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to speak with your healthcare provider for testing and evaluation.
